Cobble Hill Park will become Crossing Guard Park, in memory of Peter Clark

Barrhaven is getting a park named for the man who spent his mornings getting its children safely across the street. At its July 15 meeting, City Council approved a motion from Barrhaven West Councillor David Hill, seconded by Councillor Riley Brockington, to commemoratively rename Cobble Hill Park, at 200 Cobble Hill Drive, as Crossing Guard Park. In a video announcement on his Facebook page, Hill said the vote was unanimous and that a memorial plaque is planned for the park in Mr. Clark's honour.

Peter Clark, 55, died in March after being struck while on duty at the crossing at Cedarview Road and Kennevale Drive, near Mary Honeywell Elementary School. The park that will carry the crossing guards' name sits about a block from his corner.

The motion frames the renaming as a tribute not only to Mr. Clark but to all crossing guards who stand at intersections each day to protect children, families and neighbourhoods.

The neighbourhood has been carrying his memory since the spring. Flags at City facilities flew at half-mast in the days after his death, and in early May hundreds of neighbours, parents and children gathered at a vigil remembering the man CTV News called the crossing guard with the friendly smile, a fixture families relied on every school morning.
