Prime Minister and Nepean MP Mark Carney launched the $8.8-billion Canada-Ontario Municipal Development Charge Reduction Program at a Caivan homebuilding site in Nepean on June 1. The 10-year program gives municipalities that cut development charges by at least 30 per cent access to a federal-provincial infrastructure fund, covering up to half the reduction for three years, and pairs with the removal of the 13 per cent HST on new Ontario homes valued up to $1 million. The stated aim is to lower the cost of building new homes — a direct factor in Barrhaven’s fast-growing subdivisions. Applications are open through Ontario’s channels.
