Barrhaven civic centre survey remains open after residents raise questions at kickoff

Barrhaven residents can still give feedback on the planned civic centre and Ottawa Public Library branch at 180 Riocan Avenue through August 31. The City says the proposed hub would bring a district-level library branch, cultural centre, seniors’ space, urban park and plaza together in the Barrhaven Town Centre, with about 5,000 square metres of indoor space.

The August 10 project kickoff drew residents to see the preliminary concepts and speak with staff and councillors. Capital Current reported that some members of the Barrhaven Seniors’ Council raised concerns about the size and arrangement of the dedicated seniors’ space. The outlet also reported that, amid Barrhaven’s rapid growth, the expected future closure of the Ruth E. Dickinson Branch when the new facility opens is being reconsidered.

The City describes the current work as early-stage planning. It says a more detailed survey will follow as the design develops and a formal public information session is planned for the first quarter of 2027.
